What's Driving Hiring Right Now
1. Research is booming โ especially at Augusta and Georgia Tech
Federal research funding continues to flow into the USG system. Augusta University's medical campus is hiring heavily for clinical research roles tied to NIH and DoD grants. Georgia Tech's interdisciplinary research institutes โ GTRI, IPaT, IPST โ are posting research scientist and program manager roles at a pace that's hard to keep up with.
2. Campus police hiring is a system-wide priority
With 13 open police officer positions across campuses, law enforcement is consistently one of the most in-demand non-academic roles. USG campuses typically offer competitive pay plus the TRS pension, making these roles attractive compared to comparable municipal positions.
3. Administrative staff turnover is high
The 1,736 open administrative positions reflect both growth and replacement hiring. Post-pandemic, coordinator and specialist roles have seen elevated turnover as staff moved to remote-first private employers. USG institutions are actively backfilling and in some cases upgrading role classifications.
4. Facilities and skilled trades are underserved
With 229 open positions, facilities roles are among the easier paths into the USG system for candidates without a degree. Competition is lower, positions fill more slowly, and benefits (especially TRS pension and health insurance) are identical to white-collar staff.
5. IT demand is growing but concentrated
Most IT hiring is concentrated at UGA, Georgia Tech, and Kennesaw State. These institutions have the budgets and infrastructure to compete with private-sector tech employers โ though they're realistic that they can't always match Silicon Valley salaries. What they offer instead: stability, benefits, and mission-driven work.
